Charon's Opus :: Season 1: A Time Of Great Change

Season 1: A Time Of Great Change

Earth.
Mars.
The Belt.

Those are the big players on the board. Earth's 30 billion strong population crush constantly screaming up the gravity well looking for more of anything. And then you have the Martian Congressional Republic, fiercely independent and willing to shoot first to keep it that way. Those two are the ones with all the toys, the ones who keep the peace at the end of a rail gun.

And The Belt, home to a hundred million spacers who grew up out there in the dark. Well, they're just grist in the mill. Mining the asteroids for water and metals to feed the industries of the Inner Planets or the agri-combines of the Jovian lunar system. All of their riches sent back to Earth and Mars, leaving them with vacuum and a hardscrabble life. There's a rumour that one day Earth and Mars will go to war to decide who gets to be top dog in the solar system, dividing The Belt up like scraps on a banquet table.

But you know what? That's not my problem.

We are the crew of the Albatross. She's not much to look at, but she has a military-grade Epstein Drive and hull that weathered fifty years in the United Nations Navy before they sold her off for scrap. That means she's quick and thick-skinned, an ideal courier ship to get things from point A to C with B never being the wiser. We aren't criminals, but we're not going to ask too many questions if the price is right.

From the beach domes of Titan to the solar furnaces of Mercury, I'd like to think our reputation speaks for itself. And if you want a seat at our table, be you Earther, Duster or Belter...well, who am I to judge?

"Ah-yup."

Mickey checked to make sure Ken hadn't picked up anything that could be considered a weapon. A wrench. A plasma cutter. A diamond-tipped cutter. Heck, even a coffee cup might do in a pinch. Mickey did this because, deep down, if he heard the dockmaster say his favourite phrase…

The bartender had runaway, so he just helped himself to a drink. Using the still smoking business end of his Tanhauser-12 to brush away the broken glassware, he set the bottle of Marcon Red down and poured himself a shot. Hell, he poured himself a double: he’d done a hard…

Soft music floated through Ken's small cabin. Quietly he was humming to himself as he was taking an applicator strip to a small strip of bamboo. The applicator was a sealant to avoid any moisture coming into the material.

What was he making? A small scale model of the Syracuse…

The bar was a bar, as a simple shack in the woods is a temple to a hermit monk. It was dark, it's drinks cheap, and questions about the validity of the health inspection certificate were best left at the door. But it did indeed serve Marcon Red, the whisky…

"Hey, hey! This look like a museum to you?"

In a way, the little shop's owner was halfway to being correct. There was a lot of vintage parts on display, with one of them even stamp with the ColInt logo from the pre-MCR days when Mars had been a fiefdom…
