Charon's Opus :: Season 1: A Time Of Great Change

Season 1: A Time Of Great Change

Earth.
Mars.
The Belt.

Those are the big players on the board. Earth's 30 billion strong population crush constantly screaming up the gravity well looking for more of anything. And then you have the Martian Congressional Republic, fiercely independent and willing to shoot first to keep it that way. Those two are the ones with all the toys, the ones who keep the peace at the end of a rail gun.

And The Belt, home to a hundred million spacers who grew up out there in the dark. Well, they're just grist in the mill. Mining the asteroids for water and metals to feed the industries of the Inner Planets or the agri-combines of the Jovian lunar system. All of their riches sent back to Earth and Mars, leaving them with vacuum and a hardscrabble life. There's a rumour that one day Earth and Mars will go to war to decide who gets to be top dog in the solar system, dividing The Belt up like scraps on a banquet table.

But you know what? That's not my problem.

We are the crew of the Albatross. She's not much to look at, but she has a military-grade Epstein Drive and hull that weathered fifty years in the United Nations Navy before they sold her off for scrap. That means she's quick and thick-skinned, an ideal courier ship to get things from point A to C with B never being the wiser. We aren't criminals, but we're not going to ask too many questions if the price is right.

From the beach domes of Titan to the solar furnaces of Mercury, I'd like to think our reputation speaks for itself. And if you want a seat at our table, be you Earther, Duster or Belter...well, who am I to judge?

Mission: A Knife In The Darkness

It is always wise to have a knife in the darkness.

It was an old Belter saying, a way of highlighting the precarious nature of their survival in the void. It was spoken of by spacers who always carried extra fuel pellets even though they had enough for their reactors.…

“Your Soylents Viridian’s meal is now complete. Bon appetite.”

On the little LCD screen was a picture of a classically rendered chicken dinner. A grilled breast, some greens, and a few new potatoes glazed with melted butter. It was the exact image one would imagine the phrase ‘mouth watering’ was…

They didn't look dangerous, sat in their foam-lined packing crates. They didn't even look like the sleek aerodynamic cones you saw in the vids, resembling more of an overly complicated coffee maker. Spherical ball at one end with complicated wiring dotting its surface, then a chubby cylinder twice as long…

Mission: A Knife In The Darkness
Posted on Tue Jul 20th, 2021 @ 11:55pm by Commanding Officer Mickey Serendipity & Passenger Florian McLennan & Passenger Delphi Jammer

Mickey walked out across the umbilical bridge connecting the Albatross to the ISA cargo barge. Little more than a tube-shaped set of rings connected by guide wires, with a metal folding grid along one side to give it a 'floor', it looked flimsy. Each footstep he took in his EVA…

Mission: Stories From The Expanse
Posted on Mon May 17th, 2021 @ 10:54pm by Passenger Emma Yonkers & Comm Tech Wulf Edevane

With her Duffel over one shoulder and her bottle in that hand, Emma pulled Wulf out of the bar and started walking a little. "Sorry I had to clear my head and well... I figured you didn't want me to do this in front of the crew." She leaned in…
