Charon's Opus :: Season 1: A Time Of Great Change

Season 1: A Time Of Great Change

The Belt.

Those are the big players on the board. Earth's 30 billion strong population crush constantly screaming up the gravity well looking for more of anything. And then you have the Martian Congressional Republic, fiercely independent and willing to shoot first to keep it that way. Those two are the ones with all the toys, the ones who keep the peace at the end of a rail gun.

And The Belt, home to a hundred million spacers who grew up out there in the dark. Well, they're just grist in the mill. Mining the asteroids for water and metals to feed the industries of the Inner Planets or the agri-combines of the Jovian lunar system. All of their riches sent back to Earth and Mars, leaving them with vacuum and a hardscrabble life. There's a rumour that one day Earth and Mars will go to war to decide who gets to be top dog in the solar system, dividing The Belt up like scraps on a banquet table.

But you know what? That's not my problem.

We are the crew of the Albatross. She's not much to look at, but she has a military-grade Epstein Drive and hull that weathered fifty years in the United Nations Navy before they sold her off for scrap. That means she's quick and thick-skinned, an ideal courier ship to get things from point A to C with B never being the wiser. We aren't criminals, but we're not going to ask too many questions if the price is right.

From the beach domes of Titan to the solar furnaces of Mercury, I'd like to think our reputation speaks for itself. And if you want a seat at our table, be you Earther, Duster or Belter...well, who am I to judge?

"No, that one," Wulf said, blushing crimson as the woman he'd inadvertently pointed at turned her attention in his direction. He looked down at his boots and muttered quietly so that only he and Ken could hear. "She's gorgeous." Curves he'd happily die for, deeply dark brown eyes, brunette hair…

The overhead comm warbled with the back and forth chatter between Allegra in the cockpit of the Albatross, and the pilot of the Saturnian Navy skiff went over by the heavy cruiser Xipe Totec. The small boarding craft had flown under the guns of the heavy cruiser, which was stationed…

He'd started doing this a while back, sure that no one really noticed or cared, but focused on those who couldn't do either right now. Those sleeping women, trapped in their little boxes where the Tross' crew's illegal weaponry was supposed to be innocently resting, had been haunting Wulf's dreams…

Finally, Flo had been let free. The doctor, after having co-consulted with the auto-doc, decided that he was free of whatever kind of radiation toxicity he'd succumbed to during his daredevil escape on board this ship, and was finally cleared to depart the medical bay.

Bossman had assigned quarters -…
